Fatah Islam – the phenomenon in its original and localized form
01-04-2007

This file discusses the emergence of this group, and the growth of its influence at the expense of the Fatah interfada in the Nour El badad refugee camp. In the last three months, it has claimed that its first objective is to fight the Jews in Palestine, and raise the banner of Islam there. This raises questions regarding the secretive nature of its emergence at this time and the extent of its relationship with the Salafi movement within the camps in Lebanon. The file also examines the nature of this organization, looking at whether it is another façade of Al Qaeda, or a front to mislead intelligence services in the region. Fatah Islam is creating questions about the validity of the accusations of involvement in the internal Lebanese conflict especially since they have been accused of exploding two passenger buses in Ailaq in which three were killed and twenty were injured.  And, whether they have some connection in strengthening the role of international forces in Lebanon and demilitarization camps. There is the ever-present threat that there may be sleeping cells of Al Qaeda within Lebanon, who are under the Jihad to ignite the situation especially with the UNIFIL forces or with Israel.
